چکیده

It is difficult to collect and characterise well-preserved samples of weakly-cemented granular rocks as conventional sampling techniques often result in destruction the cementation. An alternative approach prepare synthetic geomaterials match required specifications. This paper introduces microbially induced carbonate precipitation (MICP) a method reliably deliver artificially cemented specimens with customised properties, closely resembling those soft sandstones. The are generated from materials two highly different particle size distributions (PSDs) access range achievable combinations strengths porosities. MICP parameters kept constant across all obtain similar calcium characteristics (size individual crystals, type, etc.), while injected volume varied achieve cementation levels. Although uniform very coarse sands has been considered achieve, results show that both fine sand present high degrees uniformity good degree repeatability. unconfined compressive (UCSs) (less than 3000 kPa) porosities (0.25–0.4) artificial fall same values reported for natural rocks. strength gain was greater sand, void latter significantly larger compared crystals’ size, resulting on less effective locations, away contacts between particles. obtained this work within ranges literature rocks, demonstrating technique able realistic properties may be used produce full by varying grain sizes, possibly width PSD.

Sequestration of Radionuclides and Metal Contaminants through Microbially-Induced Carbonate Precipitation

Microbially induced carbonate precipitation (MICP), an emerging technology for soil improvement, also may be used to sequester (biomineralize) radionuclides and metal contaminants (e.g., 90 Sr 2+ , Cd 2+ ) in groundwater, a significant problem at some U.S. Department of Energy sites. Previous work using the bacterium Bacillus pasteurii suggests that in-situ sequestration of these contaminants c...

Biotic and abiotic effects on CO2 sequestration during microbially-induced calcium carbonate precipitation.

In this study, CO2 sequestration was investigated through the microbially-induced calcium carbonate precipitation (MICP) process with isolates obtained from a cave called 'Cave Without A Name' (Boerne, TX, USA) and the Pamukkale travertines (Denizli, Turkey). The majority of the bacterial isolates obtained from these habitats belonged to the genera Sporosarcina, Brevundimonas, Sphingobacterium ...

Microbially Induced Calcite Precipitation Employing Environmental Isolates

In this study, five microbes were employed to precipitate calcite in cohesionless soils. Four microbes were selected from calcite-precipitating microbes isolated from calcareous sand and limestone cave soils, with Sporosarcina pasteurii ATCC 11859 (standard strain) used as a control. Urease activities of the four microbes were higher than that of S. pasteurii. The microbes and urea-CaCl₂ medium...

Thermodynamic Simulation of Carbonate Cements-Water-Carbon Dioxide Equilibrium in Sandstone for Prediction of Precipitation/Dissolution of Carbonate Cements

Carbonate cements, such as calcite, dolomite, ferrocalcite and ankerite, play important roles in the formation of pores in sandstones: precipitation of carbonate cements modifies pores and inhibits compaction, while dissolution creates secondary pores. This work proposed a precipitation-dissolution model for carbonate cements-CO2-H2O system by means of ion equilibrium concentration ([M2+], M = ...

Size-dependent calcium carbonate precipitation induced microbiologically in aerobic granules

Calcium and ash accumulation in aerobic granules treating organic wastewater was investigated systematically in this study. It was found that ash content of granular sludge reached 43% at stable state of reactor operation with calcium carbonate precipitation as the main cause. Since granular sludge in the reactor at the steady state was the mixture of granules with different sizes, granules in ...
